Erica Pedretti's Novels as German Moravian Literature
Original language description
This article deals with the German-writing author Erica Pedretti, who has been living in Switzerland since 1945 and who was born in Šternberk in the young Czechoslovak Republic in 1930. Pedretti has written many novels since 1970s that deal with her ownmemories, identity and controversial relationship to her homeland. The article focuses mainly on her early novel Harmloses, bitte (1970) and her later novel Engste Heimat (1995). This novel deals with the narrator's identities and roots, suppressed memories, forced migration, and reconciliation to her fate. The narrator returns back to Czechoslovakia to look for her childhood memories, to explore places where she used to play, and to come to terms with her past. She represents an unbalanced person who has two homes: Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. Pedretti's work is seen in the context of German Moravian Literature.
