    The formation of a literary canon of Dutch and Flemish literature in translation

  • Original language description

    Since the nineties of the 20th century, researchers of Dutch Studies discuss the problem of the canon of this literature. Some of them, such as Ton Anbeek or Thomas Vaessen, are looking towards Dutch and Flemish literature as to two different entities. The Maatschappij der Nederlandsche Letterkunde te Leiden, however, tried in 2002 to define such a canon and came to a list of 108 writers and 125 real important works. Everyone, who is familiar with the position of Dutch and Flemish literature abroad, knows that one sees often the same works being translated in different languages. Some of them, such as the Max Havelaar of Multatuli or the Donkere Kamer van Damocles of Hermans seem to be quite logical, but what to think about De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe of Fabricius? Looking to what has been translated into foreign languages - and especially to books translated into more languages but generally not reckoned among the 'canon' books by Dutch and Flemish literary critics, one may wonder
