    A biographical sketch

  • Original language description

Ludwig August Frankl (1810-1894) was a cultural entrepreneur, a popular writer and philanthropist, a 1848-revolutionary and a traveler to the Orient, who luckily combined his engagement for high culture with a strong commitment to his less fortunate compatriots, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. He belonged to the first generation of Bohemian Jews with an academic degree and was totally immersed in Vienna's cultural life. Nevertheless, he worked as a secretary for Vienna's Jewish community for more than four decades. This collective biography traces the many facets of his glamorous personality.
