    Anglicized Norse, or Anything Goes?

  • Original language description

Syntactic changes due to contact tend to involve pairs of languages in an asymmetric relation, between a 'dominant language' and a 'contracting' language spoken in the same area. When most young adult speakers of the contracting languages are bilingual, they start producing syntactic patterns of the dominant language. In contrast language contact only rarely changes the dominant language.
