The Case of Kaas. The Reception of Elsschot's Work in the Czech Language

  • Original language description

The chapter provides an overview of the reception of Elsschot’s work in the Czech language with a focus on the translations of Kaas. The Czech translation from 1936 was surprisingly the first translation of Elsschot’s work ever. There have been only two translations published into Czech, the mentioned one of Kaas and Tsjip by Lída Faltová in 1936 and a second one consisting of six novels by Olga Krijtová in 1977. Both translations were part of an exclusive literary series presenting world literature of high quality to Czech readers. Information on the Czech literary environment and both translators are provided as well.
