Proposal for a New Classification System for Modern Chinese Characters
Original language description
The current form of Chinese characters is to be understood as a result of a long-lasting process oscillating between two opposing tendencies: the differentiation of the characters connected with the effort to make them intelligible, and character economy related to the strive for simplicity. However, while categorizing modern Chinese characters, grammatologists still use the system created almost 2,000 years ago, which cannot sufficiently reflect the specific features of modern Chinese characters. This paper introduces a new categorization model that attempts to provide a comprehensive description of how characters' graphic composition relate to their pronunciation or meaning. Reaching this target is connected with a graphemic analysis of the so-called 2,500 frequently used characters. The suggested two-dimensional model includes five groups subdivided into 20 categories. The group status reflects the decomposition specification, and the category status reflects the nature of the relationship between the whole character and its components in terms of semantic or phonetic motivation.
