Dignity or Misery of Man? Giovanni Pico`s Duodecalogues and their Legacy

  • Original language description

The article deals with Giovanni Pico della Mirandola’s set of three spiritual writings, Duodecim regulae, Duodecim arma spiritualis pugnae, and Duodecim conditiones amantis. Although they seem to be in a sharp contrast with Pico’s earlier works, and with the Oration in particular, the article argues that they are compatible with them. Firstly, asceticism, which is characteristic of the Duodecalogues, can be found in Giovanni Pico’s earlier writings as well. Secondly, the Duodecalogues even contain a concept of dignity of man, though a moral-theological approach stressing the misery of human conditions influenced by sinful temptations prevail here. An enormous reception of the Duodecalogues in the 16th century, including translations into various vernacular languages and transcriptions of text in diverse theological works, shows that these writings helped to create the picture of Giovanni Pico as a spiritual writer and theologian.
