In deze bijdrage richten we ons op de studie van zogenaamde sociale bandieten, zoals ze bekend zijn uit de studie Primitive Rebels van Eric Hobsbawm (1959). We richten ons meer specifiek op de Vlaamse casus van Jan de Lichte en de Slowaakse casus van Juraj Jánošík. In deze bijdrage gebruiken we de histoire croisée-methode, voorgesteld door de Frans-Duitse historici Werner en Zimmermann (2006). Ze stellen dat in deze &quot;gekruiste geschiedenis&quot; sociale, culturele en politieke groepen onder interculturele invloed staan en een alternatief bieden voor het dominante nationale standpunt. We zien het heldenbeeld rond beide heroïsche figuren uit de jaren vijftig en zestig in een uitgesproken marxistische traditie en zien een ander beeld in de Vlaamse literaire bewerking, die grotendeels een regionaal fenomeen bleef.
