Human-light interaction in the car traffic context – research proposal

  • Original language description

Until fully autonomous vehicles, good visibility will be one of the necessary prerequisites for safe driving, especially at night. Bearing this in mind, the automotive industry introduced new light sources, i.e. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), to car headlamps. Yet these light sources, despite meeting all present legal standards, have different characteristics than the previously used light bulbs. These pertain to the color spectrum, intensity, flicker or surface area from which the light is emitted. Whether and how these characteristics actually influence drivers – who often complain on social networks about being glared on roads – and therefore traffic safety has yet to be established. To this purpose, a specially designed dark-room simulating two-lane night-time road traffic will be constructed, and a series of experiments and quantitative studies is planned to determine the effects of different light sources on the visual comfort of drivers. Both questionnaires as well as instrument-aided methods from the fields of optometry, ophthalmology and psychophysiology will be used.
