Original language description

The paper, based on contextual analysis of Parabolae vulpium (Prague 1661), Latin translation of the Mishle Shu’alim, introduces its editor, Jesuit Melchior Hanel (1627-1689), and presents his work as a minor but integral part of an early modern network, the so called Respublica Litteraria - Republic of letters. Through Hanel’s edition of Berechiah’s collection of fables- and primarily through its paratexts as the dedication, preface and introduction - there are outlined contacts between scholars in early modern Europe. The text does not focus on the translation itself, but rather especially on the complexity of Hanel’s life, work and his position in intellectual sphere of the 17th century Czech lands. Such as, for example, his first interest in optics and cooperation with the Bohemian scholar Johannes Marcus Marci who probably had recommended Hanel for study at the Jesuit Collegium Romanum where Hanel met the famous polymath Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). His new mentor and teacher of Hebrew encouraged Hanel to translate Mishle Shu’alim into Latin and publish this book as a pedagogical tool for young Jesuits studying biblical languages. The bilingual edition could easily serve as a textbook helping to elucidate the Hebrew text in parallel and together with its Latin translation. This project is fascinating not only because Berechiah’s fables were available to the non-Jewish public for the first time but also because it shows interconnection of early modern community of scholars tied with correspondence, academic debate, amity and prodigiously tolerant relations.
