The Early Twentieth-Century Avant-Garde and the Nordic Countries. An Introductory tour d’horizon
Original language description
The Nordic countries have played only a marginal role in existing historiography of the classical avant-garde in the early 20th century. Major reasons for this absence are the focus in avant-garde studies on developments in particular in France and Germany as well as the common practice in historiography of art and literature in the Nordic countries to label phenomena as "modernist", which are labelled elsewhere as "avant-garde". If one compares the artistic and literary practices in the Nordic countries with these avant-garde developments, not only a significant involvement of Nordic artists in the avant-garde in other parts of Europe can be observed, but also a local presence notably of a cubist and fauvist/expressionist provenance.
