The Late films of Jiří Menzel: The Broken Spell of Nostalgia and Melancholy Heroes in I Served the English King (Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále, 2006) and Skirt Chasers (Donšajni, 2013)
Original language description
Menzel worked primarily with nostalgic elements in adaptations of stories by author Bohumil Hrabal. In the last two films shot after 2000, the concept of individual nostalgia is partially cast aside, in both he places emphasis on the melancholic hero, who must deal with the adversity of the history in I Served the King of England (2006) or the contemporary post-communist society in Skirt Chasers (2013). Both films were viewed unfavourably by the critics and the audience.
