Monagh Cahoon in Trouble(s): The Embodiment of Northern Ireland in Stewart Parker's Catchpenny Twist

  • Original language description

Northern Irish dramatist Stewart Parker (1941-1988) made it his creative goal to treat the complicated political situation of his home country in his writing. Parker’s second play, Catchpenny Twist (1977), blends his trademark wit, feeling for language, and non-sectarian perspective with another of his frequently used devices: the on-stage representation of Northern Ireland. I argue that the character of failed singer Monagh Cahoon is a representation of Northern Ireland during the earlier part of the Troubles, especially after the debilitating Ulster Workers’ Council strike of 1974. This paper analyzes Monagh’s descent into depression caused by her failed professional and personal life and compares her character arc to the socio-political developments in the country she embodies.
