"Houses Apart:" The House as Northern Ireland in the Plays of Stewart Parker
Original language description
Northern Irish dramatist Stewart Parker (1941-1988) captures in his works the socio-political climate of Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s during the period euphemistically known as "the Troubles." Especially in his plays Spokesong (1975), Northern Star (1984) and Pentecost (1987), he uses the scene, and namely the houses in which the plays take place, as metaphors for his home country. The Northern Irish are, according to Parker, a family whose members hate each other while still being forced to live under one crumbling roof. This paper introduces this aspect of Parker's writing and analyzes his use of symbolism and metaphor with the political situation in Northern Ireland in mind.
