Echoes of Averroes in Renaissance Platonism: Cardinal Bessarion
Original language description
Cardinal Bessarion presented two views on Averroes. On one hand, he agreed with Averroes interpretations on Aristotle on some issues and appreciated his skills of commentary on Aristotle (providence, immortality of the soul). On the other hand, Bessarion was a Christian thinker who rejected Averroes’ interpretations (theory of the unicity of intellect) according to theological principles. Bessarion’s rare but significant references to Averroes may be reasonably explained as a reaction to contexts where philosophy touches on theological issues.
