Giordano Bruno’s satire of the transmigration of the souls in his Cabala
Original language description
Giordano Bruno’s dialogue Cabala del cavallo pegaseo, unmistakably a satire and satirical appendix to the complex mockery of religion in the Spaccio de la bestia trionfante, plays with a large number of religious and quasi-theological patterns that were more or less acceptable during the Renaissance. However, one serious theme of the work is the notion of the soul, played out in the Pythagorean motif of the transmigration of the souls. The pivotal question was twofold: what soul and whose soul? The fact that Bruno was condemned as a heretic, among others for having denied individual immortality, warrants a closer look at his predecessors (Marsilio Ficino, Pietro Pomponazzi, Gasparo Contarini) in understanding the physics and metaphysics of the soul.
