The Impact of the "Prison of Nations" Symbol on Czech Nationalism (1914-1919)

  • Original language description

One of the main symbols describing the state of “un-freedom” for Czechs during the First World War was the so-called “Prison of Nations”, referring to Austria-Hungary. This term and the discourse around it had a major impact on how the Czech identity was constructed during that time. It contributed to changing diplomacy and international relations after 1918, but also how Czechs would later perceive their own nation and cultural-political identity. On the background of recent research conducted in the fields of victimology and international relations, this qualitative analysis of articles from periodicals Rozvoj, Slavie, and V Boj! helps with understanding the extent to which victimhood shaped the identity-building process for Czech-Americans and Czech-Jews, and the Czech diplomatic and propaganda strategy during the war. It also hints at a specificity of Czech nationalism in the regional context, namely the use of political victimhood instead of religious martyrdom. This research shows how critical interdisciplinarity is when researching the national identities and nationalism, especially in a context of a multi-ethnic and multicultural space such as the Habsburg empire.
