The Piano Thinking of Ivan Klánský / Klavírní myšlení Ivana Klánského

  • Original language description

The bilingual book (Czech / English) introduces readers to the life and work of an eminent proponent of contemporary piano-playing interpretation and pedagogy prof. Ivan Klánský. It deals with his creative and pedagogical development from his first musical accomplishments through studies at the Conservatoire and Academy of Performing Arts in Prague up to his extensive pedagogical practice. It also covers his early pedagogical experiences and the gradual formation of his specific piano-teaching method which he has been applying successfully throughout his entire career. This method is being explored through the prism of Klánský’s intellectual perception of music and represents an expression of his aesthetic and ethical attitudes in the area of interpretative art. The first chapters are devoted to his career and to the key points of the methodology of his piano lessons, including the diagnosis of the player’s potential for appropriate achievement, his or her implementation of sound and timing issues, and the physiological and practical rules of piano technique and practice. We also present the most innovative parts of his teaching method, i.e. the “impulse method” focused on the range of touch and tone production, also progression in horizontal and vertical playing. The closing parts explore Klánský’s views on the interpretation of music in performance throughout particular historical periods, from the 17th to the 20th centuries.
