Golden Age of British Detective Fiction as a Cultural Phenomenon
Original language description
The paper deals with the Golden Age of British detective fiction (1920-1939), a specific era in the genre’s development. Its main aim is to demonstrate that it became a distinct cultural phenomenon due to the uncertain times in which it emerged. Additionally, it focuses on how the influence of the Golden Age is fundamentally connected with the activities of the Detection Club. The group of intellectuals is discussed in detail and the contribution of its members to detective fiction in general, be it their involvement in the formulation of the rules of detection, publications in literary criticism, or collaborative works of fiction. The real nature of the Club is subsequently reflected in Anthony Berkeley’s satirical novel The Poisoned Chocolates Case (1929), the analysis of which is included in the paper.
