Clash of the Titans: The Hidden Collaboration of William Wyler and David O. Selznick on Carrie (1952)
Original language description
In the chapter I use archival documents (memos and correspondence) to reconstruct and analyze the uneasy collaboration between director William Wyler and producer David O. Selznick on the adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's Carrie (1952). Though Wyler – unlike Selznick – was at the height of his career in the early 1950s, he was still not exempt from succumbing to his colleague’s influence and constant meddling, which, I argue, compromised his artistic vision and resulted in a film that did not leave a lasting impact comparable to masterpieces made directly before or after Carrie. Among other things, the text attempts to investigate questions of authorship, agency and adaptation as closely related phenomena of the US film industry.
