Seventeenth century texts as a key to Malagasy linguistic and ethnic history

  • Original language description

Some of Madagascar’s oldest texts contain phonological information that has been lost in current Malagasy dialects. Sorabe is a Malagasy adaptation of the Arabic script. The oldest Sorabe texts date from the 17th century. They provide solid evidence for the claim that at the time Sorabe came into use, the old Malagasy it was based on still had a semivowel series, and the change from both *w to v and *y to z had not yet taken place. The oldest Malagasy text published by Europeans is Frederik de Houtman’s Malagasy-Malay-Dutch textbook from 1603, which includes an extended vocabulary list. The material was based on the dialect of Antongil Bay (on Madagascar’s northeast coast). It retains a /ny/ sound inherited from times Malagasy speakers still lived in Borneo. Although /ny/ does occur in Malagasy dialects, the original (proto-Malagasy) *ny is no longer distinguished in any of them. The paper also casts doubt on the assumption that the Sorabe script is based on the Taimoro dialect.
