Germany, Indonesia and (Post)colonialism
Original language description
In this lecture I investigate the relationship between Germany, Indonesia and postcolonialism. The first part deals with a personal perspective on Indonesia, an account written by Horst Geerken, a German engineer, who lived in Indonesia for 18 years, from 1963-1981. The account is entitled “Der Ruf des Geckos” and was published in 2009. This account sheds light on how Geerken experienced turbulent times in Indonesia, including the 1965 events, how he experienced Indonesia, in exchange with Indonesians, but also within a better-off German community in Jakarta. The lecture also looks at "the postcolonial" in the relations between Indonesia and Germany, zooming in on the Bandung Conference 1955, for example. The third part of this lecture addresses the Documenta 15, a well-known art exhibition held in Kassel in 2022 that was curated by the Indonesian artists' collective Ruangrupa. In this part I show how the criticism of the consequences of capitalism and exploitation by an Indonesian artists' collective escalated due to accusations of anti-semitic imagery and how this is interwoven with Indonesian history. In the conclusion, I will reflect on the implications of the two cases.
