More Than “The Most Beautiful Famous Face”: The Split Star Image of Keira Knightley
Original language description
The star image of the British actor Keira Knightley is defined by an observable con-trast, especially in the early years of her career, produced by how her roles shaped her versus how the media did. A split formed during a time characterized by objec-tification and sexualization of the actor, which opposed the women she eventually started portraying onscreen – complex, intelligent heroines, never defined primarily by their physical attributes. I examine the period roles producing this tension, which I consider to be a unique feature of her star image due to its overtness and its slow dissolution brought on by Knightley herself. I work largely with primary sources, with theoretical support in star studies, namely Richard Dyer and P. David Mar-shall, and brief character analysis based on a theory proposed by Molly Haskell. Knightley managed to redirect the construction of her star image to correspond more with her personal expression, as she grew more vocal regarding various femi-nist subjects (e. g. motherhood, Photoshop, and women’s place in the film indus-try). Knightley represents a contemporary continuation of the efforts of 20th-century female stars by calling out restrictive beauty standards and gendered practices in the film industry.
