The Perils of Representation: Sandra Oh in Killing Eve
Original language description
In this paper, I consider how star status is formed around Sandra Oh in her role in quality TV spy thriller/black comedy Killing Eve (BBC America, 2018–2022) and how it relates to her minority ethnicity. Sandra Oh, originally Korean Canadian, gained success playing supporting characters in numerous American films and TV shows, most notably Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 2005–?). While Oh had been cast in the leading roles in Canadian films like Double Happiness (1994) and The Diary of Evelyn Lau (1994), later in her career, after coming to Hollywood, she became typecasted as token minority friend. Her casting as the lead, Eve Polastri, in Killing Eve was not only ground-breaking for her career but also in the broader context of representation of Asian American, since Oh was nominated or awarded for her role in the ways that no Asian American woman had been before. In addition, the character of Eve Polastri is often viewed as non-stereotypical and original and therefore a positive representation of Asian Americans. However, there are critical counterpoints to it, that are connected to the problematic nature of colourblind casting. In this article I argue that Killing Eve helped Oh gain star status with the direct link to her representation and through the discourses of prestige (namely critical acclaim, awards, and quality TV).
