The Theatre Avant-garde and the Czechoslovak Republic
Original language description
This chapter describes the relationship of the (not only) interwar theatrical avant-garde to the new Czechoslovak state that emerged after the First World War. On the basis of methodological revisionism, with an emphasis on the so-called horizontal history of art, the concept of the network, and various positions in the field of culture, the various intersections between the ideology and practice of the Czechoslovak Republic and the theatrical avant-gardes are described. The examples of the founding of the Devětsil artistic association, the emergence of the Liberated Theatre and the reaction to the rise of Nazism and nationalism in Europe and Czechoslovakia in the theatre of Emil František Burian are described in detail.
