Narrative Strands in Chinese Film Adaptations of the Legend of Mulan in 2020

  • Original language description

Over the course of the twentieth century, the nature of the Mulan legend in the Chinese context changed significantly and the narrative shifted towards militarization (Edwards 2016). At the same time, awareness of the legend has crossed Chinese borders, and thanks to the successful animated film Mulan (1998) by Walt Disney Studios, the Disney version of the Mulan character has become known worldwide. In 2020, the American studio planned to release a live-action remake, and in addition, five more Chinese renditions were produced in the same year. These works can thus be considered as China's answer to Walt Disney's production. This article focuses mainly on the above-mentioned Chinese adaptations. At the beginning, the narrative shifts and the possible influence of the Walt Disney studio on them are characterized. Subsequently, the dominant discourse is identified.
