he age of the Baroque as a mirror of the ‘late modern era’? On Neal Stephenson's Baroque cycle and Daniel Kehlmann's Tyll

  • Original language description

The chapter deals with two contemporary ‘bestsellers’ of historical prose whose plot takes place in the Baroque period: Neal Stephenson's three-volume Baroque-Cycle published between 2003 and 2004 and Daniel Kehlmann's novel Tyll (2017). The analysis focuses primarily on the function of the Baroque as an ‘epoch of reflection’ through which the crises and upheavals of the 21st century are ‘mirrored’, while also drawing attention to how the two authors deal with the traditions of Baroque literature.
