Ukraine aid bolsters European ties

  • Original language description

Taiwan's humanitarian aid cooperation with Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic and further expanded following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Due to the lack of direct communication with Kyiv, Taiwan channels its aid through CEE partners, reinforcing both its democratic values and regional ties. Since 2020, Taiwan has engaged in multiple medical aid exchanges with CEE states, which laid the groundwork for deeper cooperation in response to the Ukraine crisis. Despite lacking formal diplomatic relations, Taiwan ranks among the top five Indo-Pacific donors to Ukraine, providing over $126 million in aid and 800 tonnes of humanitarian supplies. This support includes ambulances, water treatment plants, and power generators, often in collaboration with CEE partners such as Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic. Additionally, Taiwan’s aid initiatives rely not only on government funds but also on public donations, with nearly $33 million raised through the Relieve Disaster Foundation in early 2022. While Taiwan has limited direct engagement with Ukraine, its strategic partnerships in the CEE region have strengthened political, economic, and cultural ties. This humanitarian diplomacy enhances Taiwan’s global standing, demonstrating its commitment to democracy and human rights.
