Lexical Borrowings from Serbian into Czech
Original language description
Serbian-Czech language contacts are not nearly as significant as Polish-Czech or Russian-Czech language contacts, but they have an important place in the history of Czech. Lexical borrowings from Serbian, motivated also by the needs of poetic style, appeared first in the translations and original works of 19th century Czech writers. In the 20th century, some of the lexical borrowings from Serbian then spread beyond poetry and prose, expanded to include other expressions and became familiar and commonly used words in Czech (especially in the field of gastronomy). The aim of this paper is to determine, on the basis of the Czech National Corpus, to what extent lexical borrowings from Serbian occur in contemporary Czech.
