The 22nd EATS Annual Conference, held at Palacký University Olomouc and organised by the EUVIP project team, explored Taiwan’s role in the evolving geopolitical and geo-economic dynamics of the Indo-Pacific. The conference addressed how, over the past decade, the Indo-Pacific has become a focal point of global power competition, with Taiwan positioned at the crossroads of East Asia and at the centre of Sino–US rivalry and rising security challenges.Discussions highlighted Taiwan’s significance as a like-minded democratic partner in the pursuit of a rules-based regional order, as well as its role as an innovation hub and key contributor to socio-economic development in the Indo-Pacific. At the same time, the conference examined the historical construction of the Indo-Pacific concept, reflecting on the region’s colonial legacies, indigenous agency, and multi-ethnic societies. Taiwan’s own colonial history and diverse social fabric were presented as an underexplored case illustrating the complexities of the region.By bringing together international scholars and experts, the conference provided an interdisciplinary forum to connect contemporary strategic debates with historical perspectives, thereby deepening academic cooperation between Europe and Taiwan and advancing research on Indo-Pacific transformations.
