    Moravian language: fiction or reality?

  • Original language description

This chapter offers an overview of attempts to define the Moravian language as an autonomous language, which would be considered a counterpart or alternative to the Czech language and could serve as a standard language in Moravia, one of the historical Czech lands. In the first part, the author outlines the linguistic situation in the contemporary Czech Republic and shows how the inhabitants of the state declare Moravian nationality and Moravian language as their mother tongue in the light of Czech censuses from 1991 to 2021. In the second part of the chapter, the author evaluates the various attempts to define the Moravian language and concludes that they are mostly rudimentary and dilettantish (because the dialects in Moravia are very diverse and do not have many common features). The author devotes the third part of the chapter to the Hanakian language, which is probably the most real and vivid Moravian alternative to standard Czech: it is a regional literary standard that exists on the basis of the Central Moravian (Hanakian) dialects and which has a written tradition of more than one hundred and fifty years.
