The Two Immigration Crises: Their Impact on EU Security, Politics and Polity
Original language description
The current immigration crisis has had a significant impact on the security, politics and policy of the EU and its member states. Therefore the main aim of this chapter is to explore the impact of immigration in these areas. The chapter explores the issue of the securitization of immigration during the contemporary immigration crisis and compares it with the crisis in the 1990s. Second it compares the response of the EU institutions during the 1990s and the current crisis and; third, it also evaluates the political impact of immigration during the 1990s and the current immigration crisis on the political parties and public opinion. This chapter claims that the current immigration crisis is fully securitized and thus has a much stronger potential to impact on domestic politics and EU policies than in the 1990s crisis
