Legal clinics and social justice in post-communist countries
Original language description
Communist regimes prioritized legality over legitimacy and socialism over justice. Transition to democracy opened a lot of new possibilities, but also highlighted shortages in areas like value-oriented interpretation of law, legal education, civic society, professional ethics, access to justice, protection of human rights and many others. Many of these problems needed to be addressed by a new generation of lawyers, educated not for the communist society, but for democracy. The opportunity to reform the system of legal education was unique and those who seized this opportunity, needed to change not only the content of education, but the methods as well. Thanks to efforts of many experienced clinicians from all over the world, and no less of many enthusiastic academics and students from Central and Eastern Europe, the clinical legal education was introduced to many law schools in transition countries.
