The United Nations Peacekeeping Operations and International Law - Is There a Legal Basis?
Original language description
Private Military and Security Companies are more and more often hired not just by states, but also by the United Nations itself. Their use is connected with much controversy and obscurity concerning their legal status. Recently, they are often deployed within United Nations peacekeeping operations, and as a result, many legal questions arise. Indeed, questions connected to legal basis of peacekeeping operations, as well as principles of peacekeeping are of utmost importance. Besides that, norms of international humanitarian law should be answered, if one wants to have assurance that the most fundamental principle of international humanitarian law, namely the principle of distinction between combatants and civilians, is going to be respected.
