This article focuses - after general analysis of the text and its issues was given- on the extant versions of the hagiographic narrative known as Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis. The text contained a number of innovative and - in context of Antique and early Christian society - potentially subversive features: the central character, Perpetua, is a woman who is claimed by the eitor of the text to have extraordinary spiritual authority and she rejects all conventional social roles that were considered natural for a woman (mother, wife, daughter). These novel features were felt to undermine the existing social order and hierarchy, and it was necessary to explain them away in order to make the text more compliant with traditional and generally accepted social values. This was the aim of the later version of the narrative known as Acta Perpetuae.

Tento článek nejprve analyzuje text martyrologického textu známého jako Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis a podává přehled o problémech, které se k tomuto textu vztahují. Passio Perpetuae obsahovala řadu inovačních prvků, které byly v antické a raně křesťanské společnosti chápány jako podvratné: Perpetue, která je hlavní postavou, přičítá autor textu mimořádnou duchovní autoritu a zároveň ji charakterizuje jako ženu, jež odvrhla všechny konvenční sociální role (matka, manželka, dcera), které jí podle tehdejších standardů náležely. Tyto inovativní rysy byly chápány jako hrozba stávajícímu sociálnímu pořádku a hierarchii a bylo zapotřebí je potlačit a text tímto způsobem "znormalizovat". Právě to bylo cílem pozdější verze textu, který je znám jako Acta Perpetuae. Ve druhé části článku je ukázáno, jak autor Acta Perpetuae svůj záměr naplnil a jakých k tomu užil prostředků.
