Passio Perpetuae and Acta Perpetuae: Tradition, Authority, and Rewriting of Martyrdom
Original language description
This study summarizes the author's previous investigations of the mutual relationship between the Latin hagiographical narrative Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis from the early thirst century and later abridged version of the text known as Acta Perpetuae. It comes to conclusion that Acta Perpetuae can be dated to the mid-fifth century AD, the main purpose of their creation was to radically rewrite the original narrative and replace it by a purified text, more compliant with the changed socio-theological hierarchies.
