Swinburne's A Priori Case from Perfect Love for the Trinity: A Reconstruction and the Obstacle of All-Perfection

  • Original language description

This is a philosophical study of an a priori argument by Richard Swinburne for a version of the Trinity doctrine. The case is a priori roughly in the sense of proceeding apart from any revelation. Its premise, argued by Swinburne elsewhere and not discussed here, is theism, stated thus: exactly one uncaused divine individual exists. The conclusion is the (so called) functional Trinity doctrine: exactly three divine individuals exist, interdependent in action and existence. The paper explores how this doctrine is supposed to follow from theism. After laying out the concepts of a divine individual and of the said interdependence amongst divine individuals, the gist of Swinburne's case is identified. Salient in it are the following claims: perfect love can only happen between at least two equals; perfect love can only happen between two equals if they co-operate in sharing their goods with yet another equal; any fourth or further divine individual cannot provide any additional kind of goo
