The True Text: Ambrose, Jerome and Ambrosiaster on the Variety of Biblical Versions
Original language description
In the second half of the fourth century, a question arises how to reconcile the authority of the Bible with the plurality of its translations and versions. Which wording is to be endorsed and interpreted? Should the Greek codices take preference over Old Latin translations? The paper explores the approaches of Ambrose, Jerome, and Ambrosiaster to the variants of the biblical text and its translations, their reasoning and argumentation for the preferred readings and interpretations, their attitudes to the authority of the Bible and their mutual interactions on this issue.
