Searching for Positive Side Effects of Common Drugs

According to a study on 26 drugs or dug classes approved by the US FDA between 1984 and 2009 that were judged to be transformative, nine (35%) were repurposed from products developed for other indications. Drug repurposing or repositioning is based mainly on serendipitous observation of unexpected positive side effects of an already used drug. This clearly suggests that drug repurposing remains a powerful and fruitful strategy today. Patients taking common drugs are the best ‘experiment’ to uncover real, in contrast to laboratory-modeled, unexpected interactions between a molecule and a disease. Governments should finance systematic monitoring of positive side effects of existing drugs and fund clinical trials of unpatentable drugs whose positive side effects could cure a deadly disease.
