Cytokinins in biotechnology and medicine
Original language description
New series of cytokinins derived from 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) have been developed for agricultural and biotechnological applications. These compounds exhibit very high biological activities in different cytokinin bioassays. Preferentially, the methoxyand fluoro derivatives had 2-10 times higher activity then trans-zeatin and expressed very positive antisenescent and morphogenetic properties in different in vitro cultures of some horticulture species. These compounds have been recently identified as new natural cytokinins. Our research focused on the primary mechanism of action of plant hormones cytokinins in cell division cycle has showed that natural plant cytokinins are rather non-specific inhibitors of various protein kinases. Surprisingly, amongaromatic cytokinin derivatives, we have discovered a compound, 2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-6-benzylamino-9-methylpurine, named "olomoucine", which specifically inhibits some cyclin-dependent kinases (cdks) at micromolar concentration.
