Aminoaldehydes: reactive products of polyamine degradation
Original language description
The oxidative degradation of diamines and polyamines catalyzed by amine oxidases produces ?-aminoaldehydes and hydrogen peroxide. ?-Aminoaldehydes may also be produced from their precursors nonoxidatively by a pyridoxal-phosphate dependent aminotransferase reaction. 3-Aminopropionaldehyde and 4-aminobutyraldehyde belong to the best substrates of NAD(P)+-dependent aminoaldehyde dehydrogenase. In this way they are oxidized to ?-alanine and 4-aminobutyric acid. 4-Aminobutyraldehyde and 5-aminovaleraldehydespontaneously cyclize to 1-pyrroline and 1-piperideine, respectively. The heterocycles are subsequently utilized in the production of several types of alkaloids. 4-Aminobutyraldehyde has recently been identified as the precursor of another kind of secondary metabolite, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, causing fragrance in certain rice varieties. 3-Aminopropionaldehyde is known as a potent cytotoxin. It is associated with certain diseases like cerebral ischemia and stroke.
