Antabuse repurposing: we need more knowledge and wide international support
Original language description
Antabuse in the human body is metabolized to diethyldithiocarbamate and its derivatives,1 which are quite reactive compounds2 targeting many cellular proteins.3 However, the active compounds in Antabuse-mediated cancer suppression seem to be relatively nonreactive complexes of diethyldithiocarbamate with zinc or copper formed in the body, not Antabuse on its own. That is why Antabuse is tested with copper supplementation in Utah clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00742911).
