PPV-M monitoring in and out of intensive orchards in South Moravia
Original language description
Plum pox virus, the causal agent of sharka disease of plums, apricots, and peaches, is known to be present in most of the stone fruit growing areas in the Czech Republic. Previous studies have confirmed the presence of Plum pox virus strain M (PPV-M), D(PPV-D), and Rec (PPV-Rec) in various Prunus species all over the south Moravia region. Only little is known about the epidemiology of PPV-M there. During 2005-2010 a survey in south Moravia covering 75% of peach orchards has been conducted to enlarge the knowledge about the recent distribution of PPV-M. Mass occurrence PPV-M was found in all inspected 12 peach and 2 apricot orchards. Escape of PPV-M into the vicinity of infected orchards was noted, plums (Prunus domestica) and Myrobalane (Prunus cerasifera) were detected as sporadic hosts. Natural spreading does not exceed 3.6 km distance after 25 years from the first observation of sharka disease symptoms there.
