Systematic cartography in web atlas engineering

  • Original language description

Atlas production is largely a joint work of cartographers and designers. By undertaking the process of atlas production as a GIT project, a team of collaborators might be developed to incorporate experts on GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, spatial databases and spatial analysts. Furthermore, when digital atlas production is designed as a web interactive application, the team is extended to include computer developers and web engineers. This paper explores a concept of student team work which integrates various geographic, cartographic and GIT activities within web atlas production. The concept is based on systematic cartography which is a term for considering various kinds of relationships in cartography. The systematic approach is applied to both cartographic and technological aspects. Several study cases of the authors’ projects demonstrate the above-mentioned concept at three main scale levels – national level, regional level and local level. The paper mentions the concept impact on students through their students whose gain skills of communication and collaboration in all aspects of map and spatial literacy.
