Armenian return migration from the EU states
Original language description
This paper focuses on the specifics of the return migration to Armenia and maps the experience of the recent Armenian returnees from the EU states. It presents the case for the multiplicity of return migration experience of different Armenian returnees – ranging from the participants of the EU assisted voluntary return and reintegration (AVRR) programmes to the so-called spontaneous returnees. This study uses semi-structured qualitative interviews with the returnees and key informants conducted in Armenia between 2016 and 2018. It covers the broader areas affecting the return and reintegration policies as well as the organizations and programmes participating in the process of return and offering assistance to prospective returnees. The paper inquires about the importance of networks and social capital in return migration. The individual motivation to return and its voluntariness is shown to be important for sustainable return.
