Microfinance institutions and the products they offer should, according to the theory, empower disadvantaged households to improve the quality of life of their members at the micro level. At the macro level, microfinance is seen as a strategic tool in the fight against poverty. The impacts of basic microfinance products (microinsurance, microcredits, micro-savings and small-scale financial transfers) are not always undeniably transparent. This paper compares the characteristics of microfinance products from the viewpoints of clients and management of the organizations Wakulima Maendeleo Group in Tanzania, and ADS Nyanza in Kenya.
