Final report for The IOC Olympic Studies Centre: South American Sport for Development voices and the Sustainable Development Goals
Original language description
The aim of our study was twofold: first, based on the series of case studies in South American countries, we have built the evidence consisting of interpretations and views of SDP initiatives’ stakeholders on reaching the UN’s Sustainable Development Agenda (2015) where sport is capable to make a substantial contribution (Dudfield 2019). Second, we let local actors critically assess the potential of SFD initiatives to contribute to solving development goals on the local level within the specific context of South American countries. The respective UN Agenda 2030 (2015) goals are as follows: Healthy life and well-being for all (Goal 3), Inclusive education and lifelong learning (Goal 4), Gender equality and empowering of women (Goal 5), Sustainable economic growth and decent work for all (Goal 8), Sustainable and safe cities and settlements (Goal 11),promoting peaceful societies with access to justice for all with inclusive institutions at all levels (Goal 16) and building partnerships for sustainable development (Goal 17). Fieldwork research was carried out in 3 different South American countries, totalising 5 research loci (Colombia, Uruguay and South, Northeast and North of Brazil). The qualitative methodological procedures used in the field were, interviews, focus groups and document analysis. Data gathered from the field work was analysed using thematic analysis.
