Problematising digital democracy
Original language description
In the era of digital transformation, this chapter critically examines the promises and challenges of digital technology in achieving just and sustainable outcomes through participatory processes. Drawing on a critical interpretive review, it synthesises recent research on digital participatory planning and environmental decision-making, both in the UK and globally. The analysis underscores the influence of digital inequalities, socio-economic dynamics, and contextual factors on the effectiveness of technology in fostering meaningful participation. This chapter challenges the prevailing ‘digital-by-default’ attitude and advocates for adaptable, hybrid approaches that recognise the unique characteristics of digital environments. It highlights the complexity of addressing sustainability and social justice challenges, emphasising that purely technological solutions are insufficient. The findings offer valuable insights to guide future research and practice in digital participatory planning.
