Experiences from Implementing a Football for Development Programme as a Tool for Social Cohesion in the Olomouc Region, Czech Republic
Original language description
In the context of the Czech Republic, the link between social cohesion and sport for development (SDP) has not yet been rigorously studied. Even outside sports research, the last large-scale study elaborating on the process of construction and understanding of social cohesion is more than 15 years old (Tuček, 2006), even though partial inquiries dealing with the topic have been conducted repeatedly by the Czech Academy of Science (Tucˇek, 2018) or by other authors focusing on related issues such as social capital (Häuberer, 2011). While scholars have already outlined the Czech context of SDP activities and projects, at least on a general descriptive level (Šafarˇíková & Svoboda, 2021), the explicit link to social cohesion is still to be elaborated. However, this chapter’s goal is not that ambitious. First, we will introduce the current scholarship centred on the concept of social cohesion and SDP-related activities in the Czech Republic. Then, we will present a programme called Fotbal pro Rozvoj, in the following referred to as Football for Development (FfD), as our specific example of an SDP activity: its basic conceptualisation, expectations, implementation, and results based on the FfD’s curriculum documents and published reports. Third, we will link the information gathered from the FfD’s target group, coordinators, and other stakeholders from the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic to the goals of FfD presented in its guidelines document and, simultaneously, link them back to the understanding of social cohesion in the Czech Republic. Hence, we will be able to compare the perceived potential of the programme, expectations of involved actors, and possible synergies it brings for social cohesion in one of the regions in the Czech Republic.
