Reference and Conjunction in Texts Written by Czech and Native Speakers of English

  • Original language description

The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of selected cohesive devices found in English texts written by native and Czech users of the language. Its main purpose is to draw attention to the most salient differences between the usage of reference devices and conjunctive elements by Czech advanced students of English and English native speakers. The difference include e. g. a significantly higher frequency of personal pronouns and of certain intersentenial connectors. The outcomes of the analysis can help English teachers to modify and optimize their teaching of practical language and, particlularly, of academic writing.
